Should I be ordering University transcripts?
Hi all,
I'm moving over to the US in January on an IR1. In preparing for the move, I'm trying to get ahead of myself on some of the paperwork i.e. certificates from my current car insurance etc. I don't have a job lined up so will be applying to various positions upon arrival, and was wondering whether the recruitment process will generally require copies of my transcripts for my degree? If that's always going to be the case, I was considering ordering those now to help speed the process up down the line, although my University charges an absolute fortune for them. If I won't be needing them, then I won't bother ordering them. Types of jobs I'll be applying for - white collar corporate roles, mid-mgmt etc. All advice gratefully received. |
Re: Should I be ordering University transcripts?
I did both my degrees in the UK....I have to say...any job I ever applied for or got here in the states never asked me for transcripts...or even my certificates lol. I think you mainly would need transcripts if you were wanting to enter college/univeristy over here. I was looking into doing another masters here and the university wanted transcripts of my previous degree. That's the only time I've ever been asked for them.

Re: Should I be ordering University transcripts?
If you have a decent résumé and experience, and aren't applying for jobs where your degree knowledge is critically relevant, then the chances of you needing or being asked for transcripts is going to be as close to zero as makes no difference. Like IndigoGirl said above, the only people on BE who seem to need them are those applying for educational courses, where previous studies will provide the foundation for the course being applied for.
I have never been asked for, or had use for, a transcript of my degree. |
Re: Should I be ordering University transcripts?
I have experience with many companies, that have a rigorous interview process, asking for transcripts for specialist positions.
But I wouldn't bother unless asked. |
Re: Should I be ordering University transcripts?
Our transcripts aren't like US ones anyway.
They may want to have it evaluated but I think that's just a question of having a specialist company look at your degree and say it is equivalent to a 4yrs bachelor degree (or whatever). That's just going by what my husband was asked to do, but it was a specialised scientific post. You might not need it at all. |
Re: Should I be ordering University transcripts?
Thanks all, I'm going to pass on it and order them if it's specifically requested.

Re: Should I be ordering University transcripts?
I ordered my transcripts for my H1B when I first moved to the US for INS (as they were then) visa purposes.
Never needed them for any job application, including the one the visa was for. |

Re: Should I be ordering University transcripts?
Going to depend on the type of work you're looking for.
Some will ask, many probably won't. I've never been asked...most folks didn't really have a clue about the uni to begin with. |

I can only remember one case of a co-worker being found out, and that was only because his fabrication happened to be for a university where another co-worker had been at the same time. |
