Should I file for AOS?

Hi,
I am on a G-4 visa but would like to apply for a Green Card. However, I have just found out that my mother is seriously ill, so I may have to go back to the UK at fairly short notice.
My question is, how long will it take me to get Advance Parole? Is there the possibility of going to the Arlington office to get emergency Advance Parole immediately after (or while) filing for AOS?
Otherwise, I could delay filing for AOS for a couple of months, though for employment reasons I would prefer to apply as soon as possible.
Any advice would be very much appreciated!
