Get your local paper and check the ads before you shop! Coupons, coupons, coupons!!!!!!!!!! Meijers have the best produce of all the local supermarkets. Sams Club have good meat. Buy produce when it is in season, for example right now you will pay upwards of $3 for 4 corn on the cob in the summer you will be able to buy them for 20 cents a piece! Couple of weeks ago strawberries were $2.50 a pound this week they are on sale for a $1 per pound. Remember at Meijer you don't always have to buy the amount in the ad to get the sale (it is an advertising gimic) for example if the ad in the paper shows 3 loaves of bread for $3 you can usually buy 1 loaf for $1. Bulk buy items that you know for sure you will use, ie toilet paper, when they are on sale. Walmart will price match competitors ad's even on food items (not BOGO). usually at least one store will have milk on sale each week, if Meijer do not then Family Fare or D&W will.

Get yourself a Sams Club or Costco membership to buy items seldom on sale in the supermarket.

Oh yeah and get yourself on the email lists for the stores you like to shop at, Pennies, Kohls, Meijer etc will sent you email only coupons.

Powell's is not out of business or going out of business. They did just lay off 31 people from the stores & warehouse. Search wweek.com for stories.

Oh yea and don't forget to return you pop cans, you pay a 10 cent deposit on each can, that mounts up over time... my husband could believe that I was throwing them away when I very first moved here!

the deposit is different and it's possible not every state has it. In Oregon (originator of the bottle deposit bill!) has it at 5 cents, but we're talking about upping it.

yeah, it's 5c in MA, but only on beer and soda cans/bottles...milk, water etc aren't covered.

In Maine, it's pretty much everything, and wine/liquor bottles are 15c...it's great in Maine though as you can take all the bottles to any redemption centre and they're everywhere.

In Mass, you can only take the bottles to the shops you bought them from, so it's a major hassle.
