Shoot to Kill?

Following on from the "right to carry firearm" thread. Do all states have different laws regarding self protection?

for example - you have a intruder in the house, you don't know if he is carrying anykind of weapon do you

1. Shoot to kill? if so, are you in the sh!t with the law?
2. Shoot to injure? if so can the bugger sue you for injuries?
3. Pour Vioxx down his throat and hope the bugger has a heart attack?
4. None of the above, but standing bollock naked in the hope that looking like a Yeti would discourage the intruder from there dastardly crimes?

one guy I spoke to said that if you find an intruder in your house, start firing and DON'T stop till you're sure hes dead

Otherwise you will get sued into bankruptcy

Mind you, the same chap did come up with the classic line:

'after we enslaved the back race for the second time - with welfare'

he was the closest i've come to a nazi....

So if the villian makes it to the garden path, are you now in the shit? is he technically off your property?

One step out of the house he is retreating, Now its illegal to shoot , You must be in fear of imminent death to yourself or family.

Depends on the state you live in.

In Virginia you can't shoot somebody unless they have made it into your house (my wife was on a jury there that convicted a man for shooting an attacker through the (closed) front door). In Noth Carolina you apparently can shoot an intruder on your property, they doon't have to have made it indoors yet, but the same "imminent threat to life" has to apply.

Hmmm......who could I "invite" round, then later claim I felt threatened by their appearance on my doorstep ? ;)

Yup. Self defence in the home is very complicated. My spouse did explain it to me but I need to read up on it.

It's not as obvious as you may think...
