Default Shirts and Vests

Today I wore a white shirt to work and have just been told that its a big no no to wear a white shirt with out a t shirt underneath.

I very rarely wear a white shirts, but im sure in the UK when I did it was never an issue?

I now notice that all the men seem to wear a white t shirt under their shirts? Whats all this about?

Me too, but nobody has said anything yet...

I'd say it depends on the thickness of the shirt, as white tends to be more see-through? Can't say its really noticable on me.

Must be your company. We all wear white shirts to work here and nobody wears a t-shirt under them, not even the girls

Just asked hubby and he says that your company must have a nipple problem!

He wears a white t-shirt under his shirts in the winter, but not during the summer

I wear a tshirt to protect the nice expensive shirt from sweat stains. Stands to reason. Doesn't matter what color it is. Also obviously if it's too thin the workplace prudes over here can't take it....

I was always told to wear a good quality shirt which you couldn't see through (hard to get these days) because wearing a t-shirt under a shirt looks untidy.

I would say wearing a tshirt under a button-down work shirt is the norm for men here, especially in summer, and especially when wearing light-colored shirts.

There are three reasons for this: 1) to hide the nipples; 2) to hide the chest hair; and 3) to help with sweat.

It's pretty gross to see a guy's nipples and chest hair showing through their shirt, not to mention the brown underarm sweat stains -- yuck!

It was one of my biggest pet peeves when I lived in Chile, and only then did I learn that it was NOT the norm for all men! FWIW, my husband is also British but always wears tshirts underneath, regardless of what color shirt he's wearing...

Yup I've noticed it too. Even construction workers, working outside on a house they are building in all the heat, are wearing white t-shirts under their shirts. Phew! Must be roasting! But didn't see any wearing vests, as they would be what I would call waistcoats

I've noticed that too, but as I just about fry in the summer heat wearing an office shirt without a T-shirt underneath I can't imagine what it would be wearing one with.

My hubby always wears a Tshirt under his polos. It actually helps here because although it's like an oven outside, all the offices here have the AC cranked to bloody Siberian levels. I would bring in my heavy leather jacket if it didn't look so silly. I always find it amusing that I have to bring an overshirt or jumper to wear indoors. LOL

Don't know why this thread got my attention but...

What industry do you work in? I know NJ is home to many conservative industries: banking, insurance and health care administration etc. It may just be that you work in a more conservative environment and this is a holdover from the days of more formal dress?

re: chest hair, in my own experience chest hair sticks through the shirt material, this does look VERY ugly...

I have worked in many airconditoned, and some severely OVER airconditioned offices, and I have never worked in one where I found it too cold to be comfortable - I am naturally warm, and even though it might be "cool" in my office in NC, I am still more than comfortably warm, but that is just me. .....

Once when I was still in the UK I was working in a newly built office that was still in the "snagging" phase, and the AC on my floor was running at the max even though it was December, and it was COLD in the room where I was working. The manager I was working for had her suit jacket on, and then a massive ski jacket on top of that, .... she asked if I was feeling OK as I didn't have my suit jacket on, but I did have my shirt sleaves rolled up while I worked.
