shipping (weight or volume??)
 

just wondering ..when you shop your belongings to the uk in a container is the price determined by weight or volume?
also does anyone know roughly how much customs you have to pay for shipping your furniture and everything else?

In general, air freight is done by weight, sea freight is done by volume. It can be cheaper to send small light items by air becuase of this (unless you use a container consolidator - your stuff gets put into as mixed container).

Can't really help with the customs question. I think you shouldn't have to pay on personal possessions if you have had them more than a certain period (12 months?).

Yes you pay duty on certain items you have owned for 12 months or less. The only item we had that could have charged duty on was out Tumble Dryer and I think the duty should have been about £7 but Customs didn't bother charging us. They seem a lot fairer over here than in Oz regarding charges and we had absolutely no problems at all. Check out the Customs and Excise web site it should tell you want you want to know, sorry I don't have a link in my favourites on this computer.

We are returning to Uk from USA... Customs charge VAT on things 6 months old or less.... For shipping there is a form C3 to complete alnog with the inventory list of the items shipped.... This is all for sea freight by the way...
We have a 40' container for our stuff... the weight limit is enormous and although we have had to list the aprox weight it is nowhere near the limit....
When quoted it was estimated on the size of the load not the weight for shipping by sea.... And yes air frieght is weight...
