Shipping personal belongings duty free?

Hello,

How would my fiance ship personal belongings from Canada to the US when moving on a K-1, but without paying duty fees? Would that be by providing a copy of the K-1? (but isn't that in the brown sealed envelope until he flies to the U.S.?) I thought when moving/immigrating here his personal belongings wouldn't be subject to duties via U.S. Customs...but I'm not sure. Any experiences from Canada to the US?

No the K-1 is not in the brown envelope. The K-1 is the visa that is in the passport. However, it was our experience, and I believe others as well, that a shipper cannot take the belongings across the border duty free until the K-1 has been activitated by your entry. You fax them a copy of the I-94 which will be placed in the passport at the POE and then they are free to take your belongings across.

Look around for moving companies. There are plenty that know how to do
this and can walk you through the procedures. Your hunnybunny might
owe some duty on new stuff.

Rete is AFAIK right that it can't get shipped until the K1 is activated
on entry.

I found this thread while doing a search for info on shipping companies.

Two questions:

1) Where can I find official government information stating that after activating the K-1, personal items shipped afterwards are duty-free? (A link to this would be great!)

2) Does this only apply to Canadian K-1ers? Or can all K-1ers ship their belongings duty-free as well?

Is it possible to just ship everything over via UPS or FedEx? My fiance is only moving clothes/ CDs/you know small stuff and we have just assumed he could ship it a week or so before he moved here. Is this possible or is there some official procedure about it?
