My understanding is that personal effects are not taxed, but if you have a whole
lot of stuff that looks new, that they are suspicious might be used for resale,
it could be.
On second thought, what do you mean by mailed? Do you mean as gifts, or they are
yours and that is how you are moving them, or some other scenario?

If that's the case, does anyone know if I would have to pay any kind of duty on a
$5500 (Canadian currency) computer I purchased while staying in Canada for the past 6
months? We aren't sure what to do with it. Whether I should take it when I go home or
leave it here until Matt can bring all of his personal belongings to the U.S.

If you're the USC then you'd be subject to any of the customs laws the United States
has. You could leave it there and he could bring it with him. If memory serves
correct he can bring anything of his without issue (except of course vehicles and
animals which are more involved) as long as it wasn't purchased within 6 months prior
to him moving to the United States.

Heather, my husband has mailed probably 200 books to me here, and hasn't had to pay
anything. But that's via mail...surface mail, printed matter.
And not one has been lost. <knock on wood>

Hi Vicki,
My UK husband and I want to send things on to the US before we leave here (such as
books, yes). Are you saying that your husband just uses the regular postal service
for his books? Like, in what size boxes, etc? How expensive did he/you find it to be?
If it has been regular mail, has he had experience of any other method of shipping
other than postal service?
Any input would be great. Thanks!

I just answered a personal e-mail from you regarding this, not ten minutes ago! Let
me know if you need to know anything else.

haha that it is...it's my christmas/valentine's/b-day present all wrapped into one
for the next year it has all the bells and whistles... now I just have to find some
way to get it home w/out having to pay another $3000 in duty.
