IMO, should be fine. You get a receipt on the MO. Ask the charity to mail a receipt to a P.O Box.

I know I could ask my bank, but IME they don't tend to respond sensibly to requests for unusual information, so I was wondering whether any of you guys had any experience of this...

Thanks!
Just give cash to beggars in the street instead or buy M&M's next time your stopped at the traffic lights - sounds like it would save a lot of messing around plus 45% of your donation won't end up paying a professional canvaser's salary

The whole not-for-profit thing needs to be closely examined. These not-for-profit debt counseling services - I wonder sometimes about those entities.
The clue is in the name - "not-for-profit" does not imply they do not make a profit. It simply classifies the company for legal and tax purposes and there are probably more restrictions on what they can do with the money they make.

I agree that "not-for-profit" is a neat way of dealing with tax (and apparently local property tax) issues. The Presidents and upper management of not-for-profit private hospitals and Ivy league schools are often rewarded with fantastic salaries, benefits, lavish expense accounts, and other perks. So yeah, there's lots of "profit" made and paid to the "shareholders", just not "shareholders as we know it Jim".

Actually, I once used my husband's cheque book by mistake (yes really!). Our signatures are completely different, but it went through without a hitch.
That's cuz you just gave me some a few days ago!!! (karma that is!)

With regards to using hubby's cheque book, I've done it too!!! When I first met hubby, he was bouncing cheques all over the place, he had the money, but not the brains to do it (actually it was more like he couldn't be bothered, as he'd rather be drunk!!!), but I did all his bills & used to write the cheques & get him to sign them. He soon got board of this & told me to sign them myself, which I did & nothing ever came of it!

I got super peeved last week, donated to Oxfam last year, received a letter informing me they had shared my details with other like-minded charities. When Oxfam telephoned me last week with their hands out, I told them to buggar off as the money I did earmark for them had been given to the like-minded charities they had chosen to share my details with. Told them never to call me again or send me another letter because they would not see another cent from me.
I think this is everyone's pet peeve. I got conned into making two donations in one year by a charity by some slick talking. I guess I could be part to blame as I could not remember sending them an original donation. At my age I suffer with Partzheimers.

I also get aggitated when the City fire department have a company in Texas (we are in AL) call asking for donations. I wonder what their cut is. Despite telling the fire department that I am not in their area and that if I had a fire they would not come out, they still try and get me to send them a check.

I also wonder how many people actually send donations in to those charities that bombard us with address lables. The cost of printing and sending those out must almost eat up any donations they get.

The address label things are still a good source of advertising for the charities though - you send them on to others, others become aware and I'm sure that elicits some responses once in a while - it's the spam principal; it's worthwhile doing because once in a while you get a hit that makes it worth it.

Usually, if you write out a cheque in a store and the address isn't on there they will make you write it on. I don't know how it works when you mail a cheque to someone though.

Neither have I but I remember years ago (I am talking YEARS ago!) when we opened a new account and they gave us temporary cheques with just our names on and we didn't have a debit card yet, they made us write the address on everywhere we went.
