Seeking Approx Costs for Shipping

Hi Folks,

We're about to have the moving company come to the house to give us a cost for moving our household goods to the New England area of US. All of our items would NOT take up more space than a 20-ft container. And, for insurance purposes, we would want the removals company to do the packing.

With that, would it be possible to get an idea of what people have paid for their shipping? I want to have some information as a comparison when our quote comes in.

Also, what moving company did you use and would you recommend them?

Many thanks!

$6,000-$10,000.

Try Wheaton Worldwide and Rinkens.

Depends how far your moving to, we ordered two pods just in case and was able to cancel the second one, we went to U -Haul and paid couple of grunts to load it, we just bought the moving blankets from home depo , I think $3,000 to move across country , didnt need storage on the other end.

$6500 for a 40 foot container UK to New England if I remember rightly. Removals company would only ship containers they have packed. I don't think you save all that much by going for a smaller container but you might save if you share a container with someone.

!

it's a bit of a big ball park when comparing with other people, because removals quotes are quite tailored and depend on lots of things (Check out this post explaining it http://britishexpats.com/forum/showthread.php?t=809403) so the best way to compare to make sure you're getting a competitive price is to get 3 companies in to quote. That way you can compare for your own situation, just make sure you're comparing them on a like for like basis as all the companies quotes will be laid out slightly different, here's a post with some tips on comparing when you get them. http://britishexpats.com/forum/showthread.php?t=785367

Hope this helps, and good luck with the move!

I used Flatrate - they were very good on uk side. Communications a bit poor on us side, but I received all my goods undamaged - door to door took 9 weeks, but that was shipping through savannah. I think if you came in through New York they are probably set up to deal with things more efficiently.

I've had a few quotes very recently.
For 140cu ft in a shared it was between £1.2k-£1.6k.
A 20ft container for sole use it was around £4k iirc.

Hi Jonion,

Who provided you with the £4k quote? The ones we've recently received is nearer to £6k and we think that is a bit too dear....

Many thanks!

I'll have to check when I get on the pc with the info.
But I got quotes from PSS, 1stMoveInt & a few others.

I thought most quotes were too dear tbh but I guess that's the price we get to pay.
