All I can tell you is that northern New Mexicans speak a dialect of Castilian Spanish. Spaniards sometimes get a little frustrated with them.

Hi

I speak French - which is of no use in California.

I'm learning Spanish at uni, and have done a course which took me from nearly zero to pretty fluent in five days at: http://www.bajacal.com/ of course once I'd left Mexico, I started to forget it all.

You could try a local community college for evening classes and supplement that with Spanish tapes. Read local papers in Spanish, and listen to local radio too...it all helps.

even Latin American Spanish can vary from country to country. Much of South America looks down on the Spanish spoken in Mexico. I bought this program and find it very good. http://www.learnspanishtoday.com/

It has a computer cd that will download and store on your pc and run without the cd. It also has numerous audio cd's that I like to use with a headset while I am lieing on the sofa during some quiet time.

Spanish is a fun language, but it will require effort to get used to the masculine and feminine words as well as the verb placements. Not to mention the pronunciation of some letters. But once you learn it, you will enjoy it...I think. lol I am still learning.

If you speak Welsh you'll have an advantage over English speakers if you want to learn Spanish.. You'll be able to pronounce the "RR" and the "J"..

The "J" is generally pronounced like an "H" in English, so that would be easy to any native English speaker. For instance, jefe (boss) is pronounced "HEH-fay", joven (youth) is pronounced "HO-ven", etc.

However, the letters "J" and "U" together are pronounced more like an "HW" sound -- for example, juevo (egg) is phonetically pronounced "HWAY-vo" in English.

I speak fluent French, leant from the age of 3 or so. I keep it up by helping to run a meetup.com group locally for French speakers.

I'm trying to learn Spanish, I'm not bad but when I forget something my brain seems to use German rather than English...

"Quiero ein beer, por favor...." !

not beer...cerveza .. which I know you know...lol...and which, interestingly, is usually pronounced thervetha or cervetha. all depends on the country.

also, in some places the double l...ll...is pronounced like y, and in others like j

the word llama is pronounced either yama or jama

I speak Spanish and German. I do use Spanish regularly in my job. I do not use German much (shame, because that was my favourite). Anyway, I would recommend learning Spanish. It should be very useful down there.

I much prefer Spanish to German. German is so gutteral. And I'm half German. Spanish is much nicer, and Portuguese is twice so.
