Default Is Sears the equivalent of Debenhams or Argos?

Just trying to understand the shops/stores.. and how they rate.
What's your favorite store? Worst store?

CVS = Boots/Superdrug?
Filenes = John Lewis?
Home Depot is like B&Q?
I know Rainman bought his underwear from K-Mart... is that not good?

Sears sells a few more items, like tools. But they are similar.

You might have a Walgreens near you also. This is like Superdrug but X10. The only CVS I have ever seen, is the new one thats just been built on the strip in Vegas and its huge!, but I am not sure if they are all that big, where as all the Walgreens I have been in are around the same size.

Lowes is also like B&Q or Homebase.

Home Depot and B & Q are owned by the same people I am convinced... Walked into B & Q - same signs hanging down from ceiling, people walking round in same aprons etc. etc.

Miss my Kmart They got rid of all of them in Texas, first shopping I did when arriving here in 97 was KMart in Plano, we had taken an empty flat - arrived here with 2 suitcases each and so I went there to buy basics, Iron/Ironingboard, Kitchen bowls, Vacuum, etc. etc.

We don;t have Filenes here in Texas, but do have Foley's, Dillards, Penneys, Nordstrams, Macy's, Sears, Lord & Taylor, Sax of 5th, etc. - Think Foley's and Dillards are most like clothes part of John Lewis - but most of our Department stores don't carry that much in household stuff. For overall look and range I would say that Macey's is most like John Lewis....

Sorry - getting boring - probably because I'm bored.......

I don't believe that you can really say that Sears has any British equivalent as they sell pretty much anything and everything - clothing, cosmetics, toys, housewears, kitchenwares, tools, car spares and parts, household appliances, glassware, tableware, cutlery, furniture, electronics, watches and jewelry etc, etc, though they no longer sell houses. Between 1908 and 1940 they would sell you a complete kit for a house, with a serial number on each piece and instructions on how to asemble it. It was shipped on a railroad wagon. I don't think that they sell carpet, though they do sell rugs, and I don't think that they sell paint or other "raw materials" for household DIY projects.

Home Depot tends a little towards a builders merchants - more "tradey", whereas Lowes is a bit more consumer friendly, though in truth they both sell an almost identical product range. But to describe Home Depot or Lowes as "like B&Q" is an insult as both the US stores have much bigger branches and have a considerably wider range of products than B&Q, ... or Great Mills, Homebase, etc. In Lowes or Home Depot you could buy pretty much everything you'd need to build an entire house from concrete and sand for the foundations, a huge range of timber, trusses, engineered timber beams for framing, siding for the exterior, shingles for the roof, to carpet for the floor, water heaters, and kitchen appliances.

B & Q was supposed to have been started by ex-directors of Home Depot...but I believe Richard Block and David Quayle came over here and just copied it....Its all owned by a french Company now ...

Yep, sadly I am a Target (prounced TAR-CHAY) fan also, there is a super target not far from where I live, we actually get our grocerys there as its better quality than walmart but much the same price.
The store is HUGE, with a massive game,DVD, CD and playstation section great for us kids

Home depot and Lowes are my fav, I spend countless hours in there day dreaming that if I win a few grand which De-walt drill and skill saw set would I buy

The customer service is excellent too.

UK Woolworths = US's Walmart

For the record, I prefer Walmart over Target. However, I'm not down at Walmart every weekend like many Americans.

Is there a US equivalent of Boots the Chemist? I can't think of a chain I know of.

Here in West Cental Florida there is either a Walgreens or Eckards drug store on virtually every corner

Not convinced that there is a true Boots equivalent here...drug stores here tend to be more like supermarkets selling the standard drugs, cosmetics etc....but then you turn the aisle and find a load of tat like plastic halloween gimmicks...can't imagine that in your local Boots.

I miss Boots, though not the prices.

Anyone found an M&S equivalent?

Here in New York:

Genovese is kinda like boots but with some extra bits (party food)

Wild by Nature is similar to Waitrose in the UK - i.e. a little better than Sainsburys(King Kullen) and Tesco(Waldbaums)

Expo is an upmarket version of Home Depot - owned by the same company I believe - reminds me of Habitat/John Lewis

The electronics stores here are great - Best Buy in particular is like a massive Dixons/Currys and is certainly a favourite of mine.

The amount of Walmarts and super Walmarts with have in this area is ridiculous. Its almost like there is one in every neighbourhood. How they all make a profit is beyond me. I have found that Target is great for cheap toilet paper

I also like AJ's, but I think they are just in Arizona. They are kinda like an upmarket grocery store. Their fresh meats, alcohol and sweets sections are something to behold!.
