Default School Spirit

I was reading NC's reply to my March Madness thread regarding how she's inundated with the spirit of UNC (University of North Carolina) and Duke's fan's. In particular she made a comment about how the fans dress appropriately with the school colors during that time of year, if not year round. This made me curious. I wonder what the school spirit is like in the UK. Is it as intense as it is here or more so? Do you have organized collegiate events like we do here for various sporting events? Do you have rivalries between universities like we do here. For instance UGA and Georgia Tech or Michigan and Ohio State. If not is this something you'd like to experience back home?

I forgot to mention, as well as Tar Heels Blue (light blue), Duke blue, I also see a lot of NC State's red apparel worn by locals.

When I was at university, the only school spirit was usually found in the student bars!

We do have a time where college students participate on Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. Other than that, I remember when I was in high school in Virginia we had a local televised show that was just like University Challenge. Something like that might not be practical given the amount of colleges and universities that we have here. We could do it between rivalries though.

The nearest thing I know of is here in PA, high schools but not statewide.

UGA - The rivalries in the UK are really football-based. Arsenal / Spurs , Villa / Birmingham , Celtic / Rangers. Most Universities and Colleges have sports teams but they are rarely reported on even in the local media. Over here, Colleges are the path to the big leagues (except instances of Kwame Brown and Kobe Bryant-type cases straight to the NBA) but the UK does not have the same system in place. From my experience, High Schools had more rivalries with each other than Colleges or Universities. This was probably down to the fact that the football* Clubs teenagers play for, was made up of players from loadsa High Schools.

*(sport with the highest level of participation)

University Challenge was based on an old American TV show called "College Bowl"

apart from Oxford v Cambridge appearing on the telly when they play against each other at rugby (as well as the aforementioned boat race) college sports as you know it (massive crowds, TV coverage, multi-million dollar industry) is basically unique to the USA, as far as I can make out.

Same with high school sports - when I played football for my school, the "crowd" essentially consisted of my dad and a handful of other parents.

You know I can't live without the school spirit aspect. Sport really does bring the school together like no other event it seems. I know that in school I was not really apart of any of the popular cliques and I seemed separate from the 'in' crowd. However when pep rally day came on Friday's in the gymnasium we all came together as one. Even before the rally I was buzzing knowing what was going to happen. Excitement rushed through me and the talk surrounding me was not on whether or not you were attending the game. That was a given. The topic was who you were going with and if you were going to the after party. I remember cheering at the top of my lungs in support of the football team beating who was the up for that week. In particular we would have a pep rally right before the Union-Jenks game in Tulsa, OK. Right before the even we'd gather in the gym, the band would play, the cheerleaders would lead us in our school song and chants. We'd all get fired up for the game that night. At game time we'd start off with the local news helicopter flying in the game ball before kick off. It was THAT important. The game would always occur during Homecoming Week where alumni would return to attend the festivities and the game of course. Over time it has grown. At the time I went about 20,000 people attended. That's how much our stadium could fill at the time. Now they've moved the event from my high school to the local uni stadium that fills up 40,000 strong for the event. I hope to go back to this fall's game. It should be a spectacular event.

If you want to see real passion and real feeling in sport ...then the UK has a few options ...Glasgow Celtic versus Glasgow Rangers must be THE keenly contested sporting event in the world ...the colours you wear that day certainly will mean alot ....then you can throw in Man Utd v Man City or Liverpool v Everton .....in my part of the world it was Wigan and St.Helens ...if you have never been to a derby game like these .....you have never lived ....Crowds at American sporting events are tame .....the pandemonium and excitement of a UK derby would knock most septics speechless
