School advice- L1B visa

Hi Guys,
Would be grateful for some advice on schools please.
Background- we are a family of 4, with our children aged 10 & 4 and are being sponsored by the firm on L1B visa to move to Florida. The 10 year old is in Year 5 and the 4 year old is in Reception. We will be moving from England to Florida in Feb/Mar 2020.
1. In which grade will our kids be admitted to in Florida?
2. How does the schooling system work? Is there an equivalent of grammar v/s state and how do we weigh our options as the older one is very academic?

Thanks.

I'm American and I started kindergarten at age 4.5 (turning 5 during the school year), so that might be where the 4 year old can start.

In 5th grade I was 9 (turned 10 during the school year) so perhaps the same for your 10 year old? Or maybe start out in 6th grade?

I'm not British so not sure what grammar v/s state means, but school districts are decided based on where you live (i.e. which neighborhood), so look into school districts first, then housing.

Welcome.
l have an 8yr old in the system in NJ and generally things aren’t too dissimilar just with different names for things. We have been really happy with our experience.
Your 4 yr old is likely to be going into Kindergarten next September, that is the equivalent to Year1 in England age. The 10 year old will likely starting 6th grade (if they turn 11 before Sept / Oct).
Things vary from state to state and even from neighboring school districts so worth really doing your research. When we were looking at different areas, l discovered that some districts only did half days for Kindergarten whilst the district we ended up in, did full days.
You will find that if you go to a public school, that the school will be dictated to you by your address.
Where are you moving to? Generally Florida doesn’t have the best reputation for public schools but l suspect that it is a generalization.

You don't have any options about where you send children - where ever you live's catchment area is where they will go. Unless of course you want to pay for private schooling.

It would behoove you to research the schools in the area and make a decision about where to live based on that, rather than the other way around..As with m,systems in most States, there are some good FL schools and no doubt some terrible FL schools, local education standards vary wildly in the US.
