Savoury rice - WITHOUT pasta
We haven't been able to find anywhere locally that sells dried packet savoury rice (Batchelors style). Everything in the supermarkets around N Austin seems to be a mix of rice and pasta. Soggy mess.
Anyone got any idea of a brand/supplier or alternatively is there an import restriction on it if I bring a suitcase full back with me on my next trip home?
Sad I know, but I miss it.
alex.

I think there are a few savoury rice side dishes that you can find in the grocery store - if you really need to. MJB comes to mind and Lipton's (think they are now Knorr-Lipton's) I know Rice-a-Roni is pasta and rice, but I know there are others. I don't ever use any of those processed box things anymore, so I'm a bit out of a date I'm afraid.

I'm pretty sure Uncle Bens is just rice but I wouldn't bet my life on it. I use their packet rices quite often and have never had a problem.

Okay, I've just checked a packet in my cupboard and I was right. 'Uncle Bens Flavorful Rice' comes in several different flavours (garlic and butter, spanish e.t.c) and there is no pasta added. It cooks in 10 mins on the stovetop.
Hope this helps

Was going to mention Rice-A-Roni ("the San Francisco treat!" ).
Haven't seen savoury rice or British pot noodles over here *anywhere* including out-of-state; could be that there's meat stock in the "savoury" part.
Wonder if there's a recipe for the dried spices; then all you'd need is the rice and you'd be set.

Zatarain's do a range of rice dishes which you can pop in the microwave and have ready in 90 seconds.

I need to find myself a Safeway, I've never met a pot noodle I didn't like (much to the disgust of everyone around me! ). Although saying that, I think I might have to say no to a curry one, YUCH!!!

You might not be able to read the labels but they do have nice picture and graphic cooking instructions.
