Can't recommend a hotel....what are your plans for while you are here and when will you be in town? I'll be back in SD on 27 July.

This link may be of some use.
http://entertainment.signonsandiego.com/ and also http://www.signonsandiego.com/visitorsguide/

Are u members of the AA? If so you can get into sea world for half price...think the zoo as well.

Balboa Park is nice....I often go to the botanical bit. If you are in town on a Tuesday, some of the museums are free...there is a rota info here: http://entertainment.signonsandiego.com/profile/185200

Have a great time!! PM me if you're going to be about on the 28 July onwards..

thanks for all the replies and links folks - that coronado does look great - may have stayed their pre-kids, but the suite prices over july 4th (good time to try to plan a last minute break eh ) are astronomical!

ozzidoc - we're heading there for "kids stuff" - legoland, seaworld, zoo, beach etc. - not sure how long we're staying yet - plan on 3 or 4 days I think, then moving up to san fran to see the brother in law and family.
