Roanoke Virginia
Hi everyone
Just wondered if I could get any insight to living and working in the Roanoke area, we have lived in Syracuse NY for last 8 years but a new opportunity is on the horizon in Virginia.
Any input would be appreciated
Cheers

Re: Roanoke Virginia
Roanoke a small, fairly self-contained city in a predominantly rural area. It needs to be self contained because it is so far from anywhere else!
It's nice enough, and I would certainly live there if I was interested to moving to VA. It was the "big city" where Mrs P used to go shopping before she became Mrs P.
Most of the "(self) important parts" of Virginia, meaning the area around Richmond, the coast, and greater DC, seem to think of Roanoke as the last place of any consequence as you head west before you get to Bristol at the Tennessee state line. .... Except for Virginia Tech which is about 25 miles SW of Roanoke.

Nice little college type town feel about it apparently. The missus has a cousin who goes there and pics of the place look nice. Other than that, don't know much about it first hand.

I lived about an hour north of Roanoke for several years. Roanoke was the go to place for shopping...Mainly because there wasn't anything else available in the area! There is a great regional airport and two decent healthcare systems in the area. As Pulaski pointed out Virginia Tech is close and also Radford University. The Civic Center often has concerts and attracts nationally known entertainers. Oh yes, most importantly, a decent Indian restaurant downtown!

If you plan to use the airport we fly from Lynchburg to Charlotte and notice the Roanoke fights are cancelled more often in winter due to bad weather or diverted to Lynchburg.

Re: Roanoke Virginia
Roanoke is very conservative socially and that would be a big contrast to Syracuse.
