Roadside trash
I remember living in southern California from 1970 to 1980. There was trash everywhere. I started to notice around 10 years ago here in Oregon that I could drive several blocks without so much as a disposable cup or fast food wrapper littering the roadside. Is that a northwest thing, or a nationwide trend?

Re: Roadside trash
I lived in suburban Boston in the seventies, I cycled a lot in those days, Concord, Lincoln, all around the Boston area countryside. The trash by the road was horrendous, much of it beer and soda cans & bottles. Of course as a cyclist you do see it. Bottle deposits seem to have improved it somewhat. Now we live in a sparsely populated rural area.. and in a state with a nickel deposit on soda and beer cans/bottles. Still find deposit items by the side of the road, but there are a couple of locals who cycle around collecting them. The other trash is really bad though; pizza boxes, McD, DQ, other food containers etc. Here the Amish are particularly bad culprits. They seem to love fast food, then I suspect they need to jettison the evidence before they get home in case their womenfolk see the empties and probably refuse to give them their dinner!!

We rent a house on a street that goes by the local high school, & the variety & amount of rubbish those teen-agers drop as they walk to & fro is incredible. Evey morning the husband or I go out to fetch the newspaper from the front garden, we collect handfuls of paper, plastic, & cardboard that have been scattered by the sidewalk.
Biggest rubbish providers for our street are the shops in the little strip centre on the corner between us & the school -- Starbucks, Polish bakery, pizza place, & a roll-your-own ciggie shop . . . .

Can't say I've noticed a great deal of roadside trash around...however I do notice the SLAP (Sheriff's Labor Assistance Program) teams picking it up.

See bits and pieces round here, but not a significant amount in most areas I drive. Lot of roadkill though.
The bigger problem is "stuff" in the middle of the highways - presumably that has fallen off improperly secured loads in pick up trucks etc....have seen everything from stepladders to fridges to mattresses and even a 3 seat sofa!

Re: Roadside trash
The place I've seen the largest amount of roadside trash was Greece.
My pet peeve are the pieces of tires that are on the interstate. The little pieces are not so bad, but some of those big strips.........
I continue to be bemused by seeing just one shoe beside the road.

Forgot about that. Within about ten miles on the freeway...we saw bike fall off the back of a car. Then the tyre burst on a truck and a huge piece flew towards our windowscreen. I ducked under the dash...fortunately my husband was driving and didn't flinch and the piece of tyre just missed the top of the car.

Re: Roadside trash
It makes me laugh when you see these cars, normally compacts, bombing down the freeway at 70mph with a mattress on top, tied down with 1 bit of string across the middle, and an arm sticking out of an open window on each side trying to hold it on! Actually, the situation isn't funny, but the thought that they could actually hold it at that speed if the string broke is!

Oh. I thought this was a thread about pikeys - they're the worst kind of roadside trash.

Re: Roadside trash
Actually I'm pleasantly surprised at the general lack of roadside rubbish round my way. Occasionally if it's windy on bin day, someone's rubbish takes a tour of the street but otherwise it's pretty clean. Not bad for an area one mile from a middle and high school that half the student body seems to live in ...

Re: Roadside trash
It's usually pretty trash free round here most of the time. The crim's in their orange jumpsuits do the pick-up by the side of the main roads. What p**'s me off more than anything is, lazy f*c*ers that throw their trash out of the car window and can't be bothered to put it in a trash bin or take it home, as well as smokers that throw their lit ciggys out on to the roadside. They either don't realise, or more likely, don't care that it can start grass fires.
