Rights as a Resident?
Is a Perminant Resident granted the same protections under the Bill of Rights as a US citizen?
And before you ask, no I'm not planning on breaking the law, just curious lol!! :D |
Re: Rights as a Resident?
I thought they were rights of land, as in who's here in the US gets the same protections...with possibly the exception of being armed to the teeth depending on the state you're in :D

Re: Rights as a Resident?
Simple answer - no - because the Bill of Rights is a specified check on federal governmental power and not a laundry list of what US citizens can and cannot do.

Re: Rights as a Resident?
Some bits specifically cover citizens and other bits cover "peoples".
Here's one run-down but I think it's a bit dated now http://www.1215.org/lawnotes/lawnotes/pvcright.htm http://freedom-school.com/citizenshi...en-rights.html |

Ian As far as I know a PR is afforded the rights of equal protection only. If the Federal Government chose to outlaw firearm ownership among PRs I don't see anyone standing up to argue against it. |

Bzzzt... non sequitur. I never said a PR has the same rights as a USC... I said that all persons are protected by the Constitution. Perhaps you meant to quote someone else.

I'm pretty sure the NRA would have something to say about it... and they'd probably win.

Yes, same here. When I tell the fam that I now own two firearms and a license to carry, they dont understand how its legal! Plus, they dont understand why I have them...but thats a whole different story.

i think the 14th amendment kicks in for PRL. so equal protection under the law, but you have to sign up for the draft if over 18 and under 30
No that is 18 to 26 a male must register with the Selective Service. As for voting, a PR can vote in some cities. They cannot vote in federal elections. |
Re: Rights as a Resident?
As a PR you have one right that USC living here don't have.
The right to be deported!! Overall I see the advantage of being a PR ... I don't have to do Jury duty... $11 a day here .. oh and it costs $7 a day to park. |
