Default Retirees need $250,000 for health care + according to study

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080305/...ee_health_care

New study out says that retirees should budget $250,000 for health care + MEDICARE.

Since we asked so often about 'I want to retire to the US' I thought it would be a good thread to start so people can have an idea of the costs.

"The Fidelity study, which has been conducted annually since 2002, assumes workers do not have employer-sponsored retiree health care coverage. It includes expenses associated with Medicare premium payments as well as co-payments and deductibles, plus out-of-pocket prescription drug costs."

I have a plan to address this - I intend to stop aging at age 42. (I realize that most women stop doing this at about 30 or so, but I'm a bit less high maintenance.) Not only will this provide a considerable savings, but I'll also be spared from ever being branded as a codger or a lecher.

My hairstylist is cooperating fully with this effort. The Oil of Olay is a bit hard on the stomach, but I'm told that I'll get used to it. Wish me luck.

Whilst I thank you for highlighting this, I would point out that the actual figure is $225,000, not $250,000, and this is for a couple.

Nevertheless, this is still an awful lot....

They give the age/length of time for this expenditure to encompass, i.e. age 65 to 91?

Is that $225000 in savings if you have no other income or you need that plus whatever pension you get.

Much cheaper than bothering with some cumbersome health system, I expect this will be introduced instead.

On the bright side, we can all live in shopping malls and have Farah Fawcett as a neighbour.

Not to mention Jenny Agutter.
