Resume question
1 or 2 pages long?
I wrote out my first resume in 12 years yesterday, but its about a page and a half long. I showed it to my fiance and the first thing she said, was "You will have to cut it down to one page", but I read on monster.com, that it was acceptable to cover two pages if your experience was more than 10 years.
Your thoughts please.

I've seen long engineering resumes (back in the UK). Over in the US, I've seen doctors resumes that are at least four pages long.
The advice given on Monster is pretty "on the ball".
The aim is to remove any extraneous details from the resume. That's why I customized my resume for each job I applied for.

I too had troubles at first, I brought over my CV (as we called it then)...My wife couldn't stop laughing it was 2.5 pages long with my name, address,DOB, my qualifications, my hobbies & interests, the whole 9 yards, my wife total re-done it for me.
Firstly American employers don't give a toss about "hobbies and interests" talk about that in a interview...
Take up as little space as possible with you name at the top and the address where you live directly below it and center it on the top of the page. Explain your objectives and qualifications.
Next Give a detailed list of work experiences at each company you worked at, the dates and your title. If you have worked for many companys DO NOT list all of them it doesn't look good if you have worked for 20 different places.
Make the resume clear and readable, in the end I squeezed my font down to size 9 for the heading and size 8 for the rest.
I also used round bullets when listing my work experience.
At the end if you have room list some specialized qualifications of experiences that may help you land that job.
I changed my resume on every job I applied for, its hard work but you could be going for the same position as hundreds of others. Not only do you have to prove you can do the job, you have to prove your a BRIT that can do the job
Just snaz it up a little, add a little bit of bullshit, its what the Americans do.

Bullshits my middle name, so that shouldnt be a problem. I left school without too many qualifcations, but managed to work my way up to a well paying job with a lot of responsibilty and technical skill involved, so I'm hoping that they pay more attention to that, rather than my GCSE's LOL.

In my qualifications section I put my GCSE's as graduating.
My city and guilds equal to a diploma and so on.
Before anyone says "well thats not right"...F-off.
American employers don't know shit about British qualifications...so use your imagination and tweak it here and there
If your technical skill and level of responsibilty was high before, then make a focus on that. Just don't go around saying I jumped on the moon back in 1998, as they tend to be a little skeptical at that

If you put in any "bullshit" as the poster above suggests, you're no better than any American. I think the point is to make the reader see you as better than an American candidate.

Well if you just send off a bland old resume, its going to go straight to the rubbish bin. If your american counter-part sends a resume that catches the eye of the HR manager, bingo they will atleast get a interview. Thats all what I am trying to say, make your resume catch the eye, then go into a interview and impress the heck out of them, it may not work for everyone but it worked for me.

I think what you're trying to say is that people putting together a resume should use buzzwords for their industry.
I would also add that one should definitely not use any resume wizzard on Word if they wan't to make a (positive) impression.

It sounded as if you were suggesting to others to put in lies or inaccuracies in their resumes.

just kidding
I am not a resume expert and I will not pretend to be one either, and yes I have got interviews using a simple Word style format resume...You can send a resume off, quilted in gold for all I care, BUT in the end, its how you intrigue... (I think that is spelt wrong...but hey I didn't exactly get a A in Mrs Thornberries english class either)... the HR person with your worldly experience that will get you onto the next step.
I am sure NC that you will disagree
