Have you looked at the "Moving Back to the UK" forum? If the question's been asked anywhere, that's most likely the place.

Would search through there and repost there if necessary.

If you have a UK license, use that.
As for decent ones, can't help, but would suggest you avoid Hertz, especially if anywhere in London

Why avoid Hertz? Have you had any bad experiences with this company?

I find this thread useful as I'm going back to the UK next year and I'll be renting a car. I too wondered whether it was better to use my UK license as opposed to the US one.

We always use Easycar.com. They're very cheap if you book ahead and the Mercedes A class they use at a lot of their locations is deceptively large inside. We hired one for 2 months at the beginning of this year without any problems at all. They have a chrimbo sale on at the moment for 6 quid a day....plus insurance I'm sure

I was told by the British Consulate in Atlanta that I should have surrender my British Licence to the DVL when I receieved my SC driving licence. So which is right? Do we keep them or are they still legal in the UK? I do still have mine.

Hmmm interesting. I know I'm not surrendering anything though. Not without a damn good fight.

I assume the British Consulate is right. However, when we first came out here and did the driving test, hubby was told he had to hand in his British Licence to get a full US Driving Licence. I refused to hand my British Licence over and was given a driving licence for Florida only. When I renewed my licence a few years ago, the officer said she thought the rule was stupid and gave me a full US licence...hehe. So I still have my Brit licence and use it when I hire a car back in the UK.

It's all very well the consular prats telling you to surrender the license, but WTF are you going to do for proving your identity back home now the UK banks are as equally obsessed about this as their cousins across the pond?

i can't see how there not legal in the uk because even if you surrender your license in the usa there is nothing to stop you from getting a replacment from the uk..

i want to know if car hire is cheaper if you use your uk license..

I was told once you had gained a US drivers license and were resident in the US then your UK drivers license was void. Think the reasoning behind this is something to do with the address on the UK license . I havent tried but I wonder if you can have a US address on a UK license ??

If this is true .... then your UK license isnt legal and you'll have to use your US license to hire a car.

no you can't have a us address on the uk license..
but if you still have property in the uk and use that address how does it make the uk license illegal.

My thoughts are that any US body has no right to take away British issued documents. Only the British Consulate themselves or another similar body could do that.

Therefore, if I were in your position, I would not surrender my British License to any US institution...
