Default Renting an Apartment without a SSN? San Diego

HI,

My husband and I are due to arrive in San Diego on 14 Nov (3 weeks eek!). We're booked into a hotel for 2 weeks and want to use that time to find and rent an apartment. We've been advised that he won;t get his SSN until about 10 days after arrival, how does this go when renting an apartment as most applications I have seen ask for this?

Thanks in advance!

AIUI they ask for an SSN to run a credit check on you, and as you won't have a US credit history yet that obviously would be moot. Generally in these cases you'll give your (husband's I guess) employer as a reference to confirm salary etc.

Hubby and I moved to San Diego some 10 years ago. We came over a month before I actually started my new job to look for an apartment.

Since we had no credit history in the US and no SSN, we provided employer and salary details I believe. I think my employer wrote a letter confirming my job and salary.

In our case we paid first month and last month rental plus security deposit - probably because we were new to the country. It might be different now.

Don't apply for the SSN till you've been in the country for 10 days or you'll delay things.

SSN won't help anyway, it's the credit check, it'll come up empty. Offer a larger deposit, have a letter from employer, provide references from the UK, all that kind of guff.

You'll more than likely be required to pay upfront the first/last and then anything from 1-3 months worth of rent in a security deposit anyway as standard.

Thanks for the replies. We are bringing over as much paperwork as we can to show as references/credit checks etc. It's now becoming scarily soon!
