Renters Insurance
Hi Forum
I have been looking through the various threads on Renters Insurance, im moving to Austin on the 28th. We have secured our property from the 15th August so would like to get it for when we take over the property rental.
I looked on some of the threads and it seems we are quoted more than a lot of people and some of the companies require SSN which i wont get until i am there.
Can anyone please recommend good companies to get rental insurance through where it doesnt require SSN or being there in person?
Thank you!

Re: Renters Insurance
Try the main, well known ones - GEICO, State Farm, Erie, etc. Which ones have required a SSN? .... You might need to speak to an agent or broker near where you're going to live as they should be able to deal with issues like not having an SSN.

Re: Renters Insurance
I did check State Farm but needed a SSN. Erie didnt cover my location.
Geico looked ok, i am trying to insure my watch and wifes engagement ring too but a lot of policies need a separate insurance policy rather than just adding it on which is annoying. Had anyone else experienced this with high value items?

Welcome to Austin!
We signed up for AIG inbound and got all our insurances through them when we first arrived, it was by far the cheapest way to do it and we saved the annual fee on the first 6 months' car insurance alone.

I don't remember high value stuff being an issue - we certainly had to list stuff over a certain value and we received a quote based on that information. Maybe we don't have stuff that is as valuable as yours!

As Jsmth321 said, it is the norm for items like this to be listed individually as a rider to the policy with an additional premium. You will probably need a current appraisal on the items.

I purchased renters insurance last night through GEICO. No SSN required. I also got an online quote through Allstate and I don't believe there SSN was required, although the do ask for it.

CostCo offers discounted insurance services from Ameriprise. I see you are not there in person, but do you already have a CostCo account in the US?

Look into "umbrella" insurance too.
I think it was Mr Pulaski who brought this to my attention....I'll try to explain.
you take car/house insurance with a lower coverage which will cover most eventualites. Then you take out a separate insurance for them which will cover you for the OMG events that almost never occur.
The point being that you are separating out the high risk from the low risk. So, you might well bump your car and need to claim to get it fixed. However, you probably won't run into a line of people waiting at the bus stop (I KNOW!!!! it's just an example) who will all need medical care. The normal car/ house insurance covers you for the bump and the umbrella kicks in in the unlikely event .....
Costs can be lower doing it this way and it's worth looking at.

I moved to owners from renters, but watch, Laptop and DSLR were fine on Nationwide policy, I think the Camera is like $3 a month as a separate item, and includes loss and damage, the others were covered on the main policy.
For jewelry it was cheaper to go with: Jewelry Insurance | Perfect Circle Insurance
They basically charge a %, but cover loss (mysterious disappearance) as well as theft.
