Rentals in NJ Suburbs Chatham-Milburn-Morristown-Madison
Hello, we (myself, husband and 3 kids) are due to move to the states with work from the UK. I'll be commuting into Penn Station so thought the following towns/boroughs sounded interesting; Chatham, Milburn, Morristown, Madison as keen to keep the commute time down.
I'm wondering if:
1. They are good places to live with a young family (2 will be in elementary school so fun/nurturing schools is important)?
2. Are there any other towns we should consider?
3. Is there a decent place we can look for rentals? (During the web search there doesn't seem to be a great one shop fits all website).
4. Any particular place stand out as a great place to live/commute from?
Appreciate any advice. We may be going on home finding trip at the end of July so keen to get places lined up to view, I'm hoping that will be achievable.
Any advice greatly received.
Thanks.

Thanks, will try the second one. I have looked at Craig list and it is ok if you know the areas.
This one is useful as it shows them on a map.

I am interested in any comments on those areas.
Thanks again.

Wasn't there a thread on that area a few days ago? Search it out...along with the numerous posts by Englishmum, who has provided stink loads of info and advice on the area...

Am an American RN from NJ, who lives in Morris Plains (near Morristown/Madison/Chatlham)...be aware, those are VERY expensive towns you are looking at, albeit, great schools....consider as well, Parsippany, Florham Park, and East Hanover....nearby the towns you mention, not QUITE as expensive, good schools, and doable commute to NYC....regards, ann

Thanks for all the tips.
Morris County seems to have good schools, see this link:

Does anyone have a view on how practical Milburn is for walking/cycling, side walks, cycle paths etc.
Thanks.

Hi, coming a little late to this thread as haven't been here for a while, but in answer to your questions.
1) Chatham, Milburn and Madison all have great schools. We've been here a year now and if you chose the right school then I have found them to be far superior to british state equivalent. Much small class sizes, 18 for my boys, and a great focus on confidence and the whole experience rather than just academics. If purely academics is your thing you might be disappointed. I found the "great schools" website to be very accurate, if it is a 10/10 school then it will be excellent, be cautious about anything below 8/10.
2). In addition to those towns I would consider Summit, about the same size, same location but, IMHO, more of a community feel as it has a great downtown.
3) thinkncarefully about the commute and parking at the station. The trains in Milburn can be very infrequent, eg 1 an hour and you will need to check with the city to see if you can get a parking spot, some of them have long wait lists. Summit, can you guess where I live yet, has a big parking lot with no wait list and also frequent trains.
4) you asked about walking etc, its nj! Everyone drives everywhere!! For recreational cycling and walking there's loads of places to go, things are much more open here than the uk and there are huge reservations to visit next to all these towns. Of course a little further a field you have the Pocons where you can do sone serious mountain biking, skiing and white water rafting etc.
5). Lastly renting, there are very few properties to rent, we all really struggle to find a nice house in the right school district. The best site I have found in realtor.com,q seems to have everything on there.
Hope that's useful, any questions feel free pm me or post.

Re: Rentals in NJ Suburbs Chatham-Milburn-Morristown-Madison
Hi there,
Sorry I'm a little late coming to this thread too.
For rental properties check out http://new.gsmls.com/publicsite/ you can search for rentals based on the towns you select and see what is available.
We live in Harding Township and My husband commutes to Penn Station every day from Morristown or Madison. He finds parking at Madison hit and miss not always easy to get a spot. Morristown has a huge public parking garage and its very easy to park there. Door to door its about 90 mins, he usually works or sleeps on the train
We also lived in Florham Park for a while, and Mike would commute from Chatham or Madison. My mother in-law works in one of the schools there so if you have any questions send me a pm.
