Rental Insurance - Serviced Apartment
 

Hiya

Apologies if this has been asked before but couldn't find it on a search.
We move to Houston in a week and are being put up in a serviced apartment for the first 70 days, provided by OH's employers. We are moving with our dog and as such I think we need some form of insurance to protect us in case our dog does anything. He has never bitten anyone or anything like that but it would be sods law that somone would come into the apartment when we weren't there and we would get a claim against us. It seems to be renters insurance that we need, but most of the contents will belong to the landlords. The only things of ours will be our clothes.
Has anyone got experience of taking out insurance in cases like these and recommend a company? We don't have a lease or anything as it is all being provided for us.

Maybe you could do a search on insurance companies in the local area? You could even talk to an advisor online on some sites, there is insurance to cover pretty much anything here, so I don't see you having too many problems, also might be an idea to ask the question through the employer, they may have a solution for you too. When you say a "serviced apartment", do you mean an apartment where you will have house cleaning staff coming in to change sheets, vaccum, etc.? If so, then it might be better for you to house your dog at a vet's until you have a permanent place to live. Or does your dog stay in a crate while you are out of the apartment. That would probably be the kindest solution for him and the cleaners.

If it was me, I would just politely refuse the cleaning service and do it myself, that way you may not need the extra insurance, or stress;)

Just ask local brokers for renters insurance, drop everything down to minimums and up the liability. It shouldn't cost you more than about $10 a month anyway.

Make sure any insurance would cover the breed of your dog - I have seen policies that will specifically exclude the more aggressive breeds.

If you are buying a car, you will need auto insurance so see if they also offer renter's insurance as well - that may get you a multi-policy discount (though RI is typically fairly inexpensive).

Thanks for your responses guys. We have a company getting back to us with a quote today. He's a collie so not a dangerous breed. He's more likely to hide if anyone came into the apartment rather than go for them but thought it was sensible to arrange some sort of cover. Thanks again.
