Renewing UK passport - dual citizenship
Can't find this question ... sorry if it's already been asked and answered ...
We moved from the UK to the US and got US citizenship but kept our UK passports. Now it's time to renew our UK passports, and part of the application says to you have to send in passports from another country with the expiring UK passport and renewal forms ... I feel nervous about sending both passports. We have elderly parents in the UK and would not be able to travel if anything happened to them. I always thought it was OK to have passports from both countries, but now I'm nervous that we will be asked to surrender one of them. How long does it take to get (hopefully) both passports back? Advice please! Thank you!! |
Re: Renewing UK passport - dual citizenship
We photocopied all the pages of our US passport...sent them with the application. The new PP was received with a week. Some only send a copy of the main page showing pic and personal details.

Do not ever send your US passport to a foreign government. As Jerseygirl notes, send a photocopy.

Colour copies, not original. Remember if you’re a dual national, you must send a colour photocopy of your non-UK passport (every page including blank pages) as part of your application |

'Never' is a bit strong. You'll need to submit your passport when for apply for a visa for instance.

As long as your name is the same in both passports then it will be easy. If the names don't exactly match then you may be asked why. My daughter's UK passport was renewed with an added note explaining that she holds another foreign passport under a (slightly) different name. All resolved over email in a couple of days. |
Re: Renewing UK passport - dual citizenship
Color copies of our US passports was accepted just fine when we renewed our UK passports. But to be safe, I sent a color photocopy of every single page (whether blank or not), including the front cover. The reason here is they may be interested in any prior issued visas.

Re: Renewing UK passport - dual citizenship
Thanks to everyone for the info...my wife and I are UK Citizens, currently living in the US as permanent residents (in the US since 2008). We're considering applying for US Citizenship, but I'm unclear on how that affects passports/citizenship of the UK. Do you surrender your passport when you're sworn in as a US Citizen, and if so is it simply a question of applying for a new UK passport? Does the US require you to officially renounce the UK citizenship - from the looks of gov.uk it's a more complicated process to get the UK citizenship back in that case.
Thanks for any advice/info - if this is covered in other forums/threads I'd love links! |

Thanks, this is good news! Seems too good to be true - nice for something to be simple for a change!!

Re: Renewing UK passport - dual citizenship
We just went through this. Couple of things.
1) As others have stated, you will have your US Passports so can travel anytime 2) The UK passport renewal process will require you to send your expired passports in. However, the entire renewal process took 10 (from dropping off my package to Fedex, to receiving the new passports, old passports and papers in my hands). The passport service is the most efficient I have ever experienced anywhere. |
