On the contrary, matching up your old passport to the new one would be inefficient. Your application, including your old passport, is processed, and the issue of your new passport is approved in one of the regional passport offices. Then the instructions to print your passport are sent electronically to the passport printworks in a another city. So bringing your old and new passports together and ensuring that the both got into the same correct envelope would be a logistical challenge that is complete avoided by just mailing them to you separately.

Just renewed my passport: sent to UK on Friday (UPS, $60), arrived at the passport office on Tuesday, marked as received Wednesday, processed Thursday, shipped Friday. Received old and new passport on Tuesday, separate envelopes, delivered together by DHL. Online renewal took all of five minutes. I was pleasantly surprised and impressed by the efficiency.

Yep thats been my experience. For some reason people seem to dither and have a problem with wanting to apply online from the US? Some even believe it to be advantageous to try and apply in situ from the UK? Quite why I still cannot fathom. If you believe your trying to hide the authorities will be successful in this day and age imho you are truly deluded.

Hi all! I'm in need of both renewing my passport and changing my name on it too (as I got married).

Checking the 'check' list for documents I need to send, I so far have:

2 photos
Current passport
Letter sent from a central, regional or local department (letter from my bank)
Green card (colour copy)
Marriage certificate

Do I have everything I need, or have I missed something?
