Has anyone renewed their UK 10 year photo driving licence while living in the USA.

Appreciate that there is no way to do it over here but wondered if anyone had successfully done so via a family members address in the UK.

Or in fact is there any practical reason to do so and no real disadvantage by just letting it expire.

I seem to remember there are some special rules for people living abroad, you're not really supposed to have a false address on it.

You're not allowed to renew a UK licence if you live abroad, but they will send one out here if you're on a long holiday/work assignment and need it. Read through the website carefully. I've done it relatively recently - it only took a week or so, and I was on the phone for maximum 10 minutes.

DVLA works pretty well.

I changed mine from paper to photo, in '06, whilst on a visit over there. I used my mother's address in the UK.

It was fairly quick.....can't give you the exact amount of time though. My mother sent it on to me via air-mail.

Thanks. I have the paper one and will change it to the one with my mug on when I move home. Just wondered if I should do it when I visit before I move home.

You can't renew it till you move back ! .... It will be renewed without having to take another test though ... Benn through all this and talked to staff at DVLC in Swansea.
