How close do you want to be to a major airport? Bend is a fair way from any airports. It does have a nice long GA runway.

We came close to relocating to Boulder. Still kinda pissed that it didn't work out!

Cost of living is among the lowest in the country, good hiking and outdoor activities are on the doorstep and an hour's drive puts you in Atlanta itself. Ninety minutes to Cherokee for a casino and about two and a half to Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge. Four hours gets you to Savannah, Charleston or add one more to the Outer Banks. Where I am, I can get to Atlanta or Greenville/Spartanburg airports in about 90 minutes too. In fact. Greenville is a great, up and coming city with a small feel and large amenities. Thanks Guindalf! Your part of Georgia sounds lovely, especially being at the foot of the smokey mountains - I could never live somewhere as flat as Ohio so I will take a look in your neck of the woods. I have heard that Athens is a good town, do you have any insight on that area? |

Politics isn't a big deal in most towns, and if you can just let it wash over you and get on with your own life, then there are many, many places that would otherwise meet your needs, and at much lower cost than your budget. I definitely wouldn't say I was "hung up" On politics, but I have to say that having lived in liberal towns/cities and having very strong opinions myself that are progressive/liberal, I would find it difficult to live in an area that had a bunch of "Vote Trump" signage on the lawns and were extremely conservative and vocal about it. Not because I don't respect hat we are each entitled to our option but because I'm quite interested in politics and prefer (like must folk) to be around people who are similar. Also, and I could be wrong, but areas that attract progressive types tend to be more into stuff like shopping local, independent bars/restaurants/shops, environmental conservation etc which are high up on my list. That said, I just left SF and that was a bit too liberal for me. They really take it to a new level! Lol Regarding house prices, whilst it's always nice to get better stock homes for less, I would rather pay a bit more and get most of the amenities and natural environment we're craving if it's a toss up between the two. |
