Registration interview New York district

Hi all,
I recently went to register at the New York INS (26 Federal Plaza), when it was my turn to register, the INS officer took all the necessary infomation from me, the at the end he told me that i was out of statues, i showed him my work permit that i had based on a pending adjustment of status, but even with that he had me go through another investigation.
I waited for almost three hours then i was called by another officer who handed me an interview letter for the end of January, but he kept my passport ( i tried to get a statemetnt from him showing that he kept my passport but he refused to give it to me).
in the interview letter it says : file review and processing
interview place: 26 federal Plaza 10th floor( investigation).
I am wondering if this is going to be tough interview(knowing that my record is clean) and if it's going to be an adjustment of status interview cause i have to take a lawyer with me.

Please, anyone who went thruough this experience in New York CIty or other location , let me know what to expect.
Regards
