Default REAL ID drivers licenses - MA

https://patch.com/massachusetts/marb...ent=marblehead

So they're rolling them out in a few months in MA, but you've got a few years to get one if you want to use your drivers license as ID for internal flights but old licenses will still be valid for driving purposes.

Any one else in other states already get them? Bump in the cost?

It's annoying here, because this would have been a regular renewal and could have been done online otherwise, but will now require a trip to the DMV to do when mine is due in a couple years...oh the joy.

I need to go to NC DMV for renewal so will be getting mine. It's same price here and surprisingly optional.

They've had it for a while in CT. I had the option when I renewed a couple of years ago, but didn't bother.

I will use my passport for internal flights during window between Real IDs being required and my license needing to be renewed anyway.

I have one in Texas, they (surprisingly) have had them for years now. Cost $11 and is their default option from 2016. I honestly would say its worth it just for the lack of needing a passport alone.

Any particular reason you didn't bother?

Doesn't seem to be any difference in price, in MA, at $50.

Surprised TX, was so cheap though.

Didn't see the necessity, and probably too lazy!

I'll be honest and say I had no clue what this was about and had to google it just now.

What a waste of time and particularly money for the license holder and money maker for the state. What is wrong with using your current license and/or your US passport? I never use a driver's license to board a plane. Always use my passport for internal flights and for driving across the Canadian border.

Just visited the DHS site www.lat.ms/1L4aOT8 and checked my MS driver's license is in compliance with the federal government requirements.

You will be able to continue to use your passport for internal flights. It is non- Real ID drivers licenses that will not be usable.

Much more convenient to carry my wallet (which always contains my DL) and board my internal flights than risk loosing my passport.

I renewed last week.

Went to AAA and got a regular license. No reason other than I just couldn't be arsed to collect all the extra paperwork and go to DMV for the "enhanced" one.

The whole thing seems like a waste of time to be honest.

Oh, and you don't get to walk out with a license anymore either.. Just a slip of paper.

The license itself arrives about a week later and gets left in the mail box at the end of the driveway. You know, for extra security.

Yes, I chose to pay the extra ($30, New York) last time I renewed, really just for the convenience - my drivers license is always in my wallet, but I have to make a special effort to take my passport with me. In my case, it's road trips to Canada, since I virtually never take US domestic flights.

You just need to bring a passport or greencard, or US birth cert...so it's not like it's any different though, as you always needed a form of ID?

And they gave you a license on the spot? They only ever gave a temp one month piece of paper in MA and in ME.

I just waved my old license at 'em. And yeah.. My last one was put into my hand.

I cant see me ever getting onto a plane without my passport so it seems kinda worthless (to me). Different if you fly domestic a lot.
