Perhaps this will help prove your status at the registar's office:

It also is evidence of your registration in accordance with United States immigration laws. The Permanent Resident Card is also called INS Form I-551. |

And....
Correct me if I'm wrong, at the POE they stamp an I-551 into your passport. Which effectively is a temporary green card, until they send you the real thing. :o) |
