Any info on "lifestyle", property prices, schools and crime rate would be particularly welcome!

N. Raleigh is right next to RTP as is Morrisville. Both are in Wake County. Southwest Durham is very close to RTP too.
You might be interested to know that there are two Hindu temples in Morrisville (they're both on the same road apparently. I've been to one). Morrisville also has arguably the best Indian restaurant within a five mile radius of RTP (I went to the second best for lunch today. It's in Durham).
If you can stand the soccer mom kind of scene, then you'll be comfortable in Cary. Caveat: home prices in Cary are extortionate. It could be because of the desirability of the city and maybe the schools.
Chapel Hill (in Orange County) is probably not worth considering because it is the furthest away from RTP and the most direct route between the two locations is I-40 which could be at least a 30 mins drive every day.
I live in Durham County so if you're specifically interested in this county, please send me a Private Message.

Re: Raleigh, NC
We lived in Cary, NC for 10 years and like everywhere it has its good and not-so-good points.
Good points: proximity to wonderful, wonderful beaches; proximity to Blue Ridge Mountains; friendliness of people; weather (though mid-June to mid-Sept can be very hot and humid; good airport connections (at RDU).
Not-so-good: schooling is pretty weak (we paid to put our children into Montessori schools); lack of community with loads of people moving in and out; dullness (lots of chain restaurants); lots of cheaply-built new housing (not much price appreciation); a definite lack of character (but what do you expect).
The RPT area is really an influx of northerners dumped into a sea of real southern North Carolina. Travel 20-30 miles from RTP and you are back in laid-back southern USA.

We have lived in Apex and Raleigh for the last 5 years and love it. We moved from NJ, and the cost of living and the weather are certainly better. The Wake county school system is generally good, there are magnet schools which can offer more than the normal schools. We were lucky enough to get two of the kids into a magnet school that just won an award for the best magnet in the country.

If you do move to the Raliegh/Durham area, make sure you do not attend any parties with lacrosse players.
