Default Quick question - Federal / Cali exemptions/allowances

Hi,

I currently live in Scottsdale AZ, I am moving to San Francisco and want to know whether you file your Californian tax exemptions/allowances the same as federal? My federal allowances are 2, will that be the same for California exemptions/allowances?

This may be a stupid question I realise, but even my company pay-roll said they were not 100% sure...great eh!

Thanks in advance and I apologise if the answer already lurks in the forum somewhere.

Federal is still Federal no matter where you live in the USA. You can put "2" on your W-4 no matter where you live.

You will need to complete a California W-4 when you move to California. There is usually a worksheet attached to the W-4 which will help you determine how many exemptions you should claim. It may or may not be the same as your federal exemptions.

I'm confused. A W-4 is the Federal Income Tax Withholding form. How can there be a specific "California W-4" form? Perhaps there is a specific form for California State Witholding (such as here in Arizona, it's Form A-4). But I don't think there is a "California W-4" form.

After a google search, it looks like the California State Withholding form is "DE-4": http://www.edd.ca.gov/pdf_pub_ctr/de4.pdf

Ok I stand corrected It is a form which in some states it is called a State W-4 or some variation. In California it is apparently called a DE 4. The intent is the same, complete the form so that the correct amount of California State taxes are withheld.
