No, I do as well. On our monthly utility bill for water/trash/sewer we have a voluntary contribution of $2 a month toward the ambulance/fire service and most people add this to their bill each month. You never know if you will need it...

a.
Do you reckon that would work with my wife?

She might withhold certain privileges. Not that they are any use right now with a leg in plaster

depends on your insurance...it's considered the same as any other ambulance, so if you have to fork out for it...

case last year where this bloke on the mountains split his head open, and I mean open, he still got a mate to drive him because he didn't have great medical, well they wouldn't cover accidents on high risk events and cross-country skiing was considered along with most winter sports as a high risk activity..

Our town has a volunteer fire and ambulance service apart from a couple of paid full timers. I did need an ambulance a few years ago when I broke a couple of bones in my foot/ankle when I missed the last stair. I didn't know what the charges for the ambulance would be, so I drove myself to the hospital. Hubby was on a business trip so he couldn't help and I didn't know anyone to ask.

My injury was a broken ankle (sheared fibula) and a torn ligament.

I have what I regard to be pretty decent insurance - does anyone have experience of getting an ambulance and how much you got charged?

Do insurance companies come up with the 'you didn't need an ambulance therefore we won't pay' thing?
as others have said it depends on the ambulance service. if your town has a volunteer service then it should be free. even if it is a pay service they would normally bill the ins. co. directly and it should be covered considering your injury which is certainly 'ambulance worthy' . my wife is an emt so have some background on this subject.
hope you are feeling better/healing ok.

erm...........I think you will find that even if it is voluntary they still bill you for the use of it.
(well they do here )

the volunteer EMS service my wife was with in CT used to try to bill patients ins. co.'s if they had one.. otherwise the charge was forgotten. here in Mass. where we live now it is also volunteer with the same procedure.

Well it's just satisfied me that I shouldn't hesitate to call for medical help if I need it. Not bad for $25 per month!
