So anyway, back when this thread was current I registered again using the DMA website. I wouldn't say it made no difference, but it made very little difference, I still get junk mail almost every day just not quite as much.

Wrong - within a week it will be bulging at the seams with junk mail and under Federal law USPS is required to deliver it, you cannot stop it, there is no way. As soon as you're registered at that address, that is it, your mailbox is full immediately.

With all due respect I disagree as that has not been my experience. As the OP is will be living in rented vacation property, and I assume not transferring utilities into his name nor opening a bank a/c or obtaining credit, he is going to be almost entirely "under the radar". ... I recently bought a second home, and I do have utilities in my name, but apart from the weekly stack of marketing fliers for delivery pizza l, local dollar stores etc, after 4 months, the only junk mail I have received can be traced back to the registration of the mortgage with the county registrar of deeds.

Registering with the DMA does seem to have thinned that stack slightly but that's about it.
