I thought most states had such a tax -- though I realize that is because every state that I have lived in has had an annual property tax on autos! Happily one of my cars is now 26 years old and the tax is down to about $35 per annum.

We don't have such a tax in Oregon, and we don't have sales tax either.
Perhaps one should live in Vancouver WA and shop in Portland OR in order to avoid both income and sales taxes. :) [I don't know how the sales tax on cars would work, since it is often based on state of registration]. |

Property tax or sales tax? They might put it on a lease too, I don't know, but they do in MA. Don't expect it to drop with the value of the car. Could just live next door...it's not like RI is all that big or all that nice. It's $25 per $1K value in MA...but we hit you in other areas...though booze and clothes are tax free in MA unlike RI, though they were talking of changing that so maybe they have. |
Re: Purchasing a Car

Re: Purchasing a Car
If you go for the lease option with IAS they start off high but you have lots of room to negotiate, they repeatedly dropped off charges as I complained it was too much and pretended to lose interest.
I went with a loan in the end after receiving 'special approval' as I had arrived in the US, I guess they do that frequently and trump it up. 10 months later I was able to get a mortgage so it was worth it for that alone. My only regret is not getting more money for the picture of my family with the car, they used it on the front of their website for a year! |
Re: Purchasing a Car
So glad the only time tax is paid on cars here is when you buy it (used or new) otherwise no taxes, just the insurance fees.

Has anyone used them for insurance too and bringing your no-claims over from the UK?
Doesn't seem to be going down by much at the moment and been here over 12 months! Was hoping to start to see some reductions, but clearly not yet. I will follow up with them shortly though and see what is happening. Payment each month is pretty easy though and usually doesnt carry interest, so usually a better way to do things! Oh, and read the quote carefully though, some quote 10 or 8 month quotes to make them seem low.... |

US Insurers spend all their effort in finding discounts you are entitled to.
