Pro's & Con's of American Citizenship

Hi

Sorry if this one has been asked before - there are a LOT of pages on this forum LOL :D

I am a Permanent Resident with one year to go before I could become a USA Citizen.

I am still unsure if I want to take that step

Can anyone advise what the Pro's & con's are please.

Regards
S

The right to have a United States passport and receive assistance from U.S. Embassies and Consulates when traveling abroad.

Be able to sponsor family members so they can obtain green cards and legally immigrate to the United States.

Children of U.S. citizens are automatically U.S. citizens by birth (in most cases, even if born outside the United States).

Security from removal (deportation) from the United States, since a U.S. citizen cannot be deported from the United States.

The right to live or take long trips outside the United States.

The right to vote.

Obtain certain federal jobs.

An unquestioned right to return to the United States, since citizens cannot be denied entry.

The right to apply for certain federal and state benefits.

No need to renew a Green Card upon expiration.

there's 10 and dont forget estate tax is higher for a LPR than a citizen

Yes, including our Wiki. It should have been your first stop.

We have a Wiki entry that addresses this: http://britishexpats.com/wiki/Pros_a...US_Citizenship.

That was our main reason for getting it. All our kids have dual nationality, should they move all over the US and Europe I want to be able to come and go as I please

Welcome to BE!

Plenty of decent info in that wiki as mentioned, so worth checking first :)

He'd have to do that as a PR anyway... unless he abandons his status.

oh...bugger. That was one of the things that I was using to justify not going through with it.

Thats generally about it for cons...as the others have stated, it's technically required anyway if you've had a GC.

The only other con I can think of is - if you should ever want to get some sort of high level security clearance type job back in the UK. Taking another citizenship (even a friendly US one) would likely be frowned on and may well lead to being denied a clearance.
