We pay right at $3k, but if we move further north some day (god will real estate ever sort itself out?!?) our taxes will probably increase another thousand....

I used to pay about 5800 a year for my old house (close to 4000 sq ft) but only pay 3200 for my 1800 sq ft place now.

A rather meaningless exercise given that some states have high property taxes but low income and sales taxes, whereas others a different combination. About the only meaningful comparison is the total tax take of each state.

It does a pretty good job of comparing property tax though.

Gotcha. We are comparatively lucky here in that we don't have a separate municipal tax. However, my property taxes went up this year because no subsidy from the state for 09 and increased costs for city services combined with loss of income for the city and Bob's your uncle. Oh yeah, and they RAISED the value of my house, even though if I sold it for 3/4 of that, I'd be doing well.....

Yup that's after the Homestead Exemption - it is a big house (4300 sq ft) and it's in a new development. I am just glad the appraised value was a bit less than what we paid.
