Property Tax Question
 

After viewing homes in Dallas i've noticed that some houses of the same value are paying $1500 a year and have no school assigned whilst others have a school assigned for $4000 in the property tax and are paying $5500 per year. Does anyone understand how property tax is worked out in this country. Why would one have a school assigned and another would not?

I know very little but it varies by County let alone State - were they all in the same area of Dallas?

How strange - all i know is that property taxes are high round here - also look out for the management fees if you end up on a sub division.

Set your heart on that area or are you looking round at others too?

We were looking around Garland at the weekend but seems to be older houses there. In many ways its a trade off between house type and area. As Carrollton will have a dart rail link in a couple of years and you can get a 4000 sq ft house for around $300k we think we may have a look in that area.

we live in keller/southlake area and new houses of around 2500-3000 sq ft are in that price range - but its no DART and its a bit far out!

Carrollton is a "mare" and a half commuting in and out in the mornings! where will you be working at?

I live in Rowlett its next city east of Garland, very accessible we have 190 highway very close, 66 takes you to 635 (sort of loops around Dallas) and hwy 30 is minutes away (takes you to down town Dallas).

Houses are very nice, its still got a small town feel about it, but its developing very fast.

There is a multi-billion dollar shopping mall, cinema, restaurant buildings going up at the end of 190 (firewheel shopping center) right opposite you have Lowe's and home depot with even more stores and food places.

The lake is 1/2 mile away, people are very pleasant. Rowlett police has more officers per person than just about any city around Dallas so its very safe!.

Anyways doesn't answer your property tax question I know, because I still facking amazed how they work anything out over here?

We're in a beautiful 4200sq.ft house in Plano, not nearly as far out as Carrollton, on the edge of a lovely park, with a lovely pool in an established neighbourhood (with big trees which is an amazing thing to find in the suburban wasteland) and our home didn't cost even close to $250k. DART isn't close, but we're not far from I-75 (Central Expressway) so commuting by car is easy.

Either you're looking at very expensive developments, or very expensive areas. My guess is that you were looking too close to the Tollway, which is the high-priced North-South artery of the metroplex.

4200sq ft house for under $250k???????????

it sounded to good to be true..... just did a realtor.com search on plano TX......there are currently 1892 properties for sale........then did a detailed search.....criteria homes between 250k and 275k minimum 4000 sq ft and there are currently 0 houses for sale with that criteria.....the cheapest 4000 sq ft house is $295k and frankly I find that a steal..........I could not build these homes for less than 450k most would be well over 500k

our house is 2700 sq ft and theres 2 of us plus the dog and it it more than big enough.

however, maybe it just the layout of the house, but it would be tight having three kids in our current property - we would need 3500 sq ft optimally

Well psb182, apparently you're saying I'm lying. I'm not really sure how to respond. The size of the house and what we paid for it are a fact. Your inability to believe it is your problem.

Oddly, I too searched Realtor.com for homes in Plano over 4000sq.ft and came up with many, many results. Perhaps you need someone to show you how to use the search function? An example of a house very similar to ours is this one which is $295k, but which I'm sure could be had for <$250 after a little negotiation.

As for what you could build these homes for... that's why I didn't buy my home from you!

EDIT: The more I read your post, the more I'm amazed by how rude you are psb182. "it sounded too good to be true...". That's right, psb182, I have nothing better to do than lie about the size and cost of my house. Twat.

There are 4 of us, a rabbit and a guinea pig. Our home in the UK was 800sq.ft and it was ****ing miserable.
