It's all a bit odd. When they opened in the UK, there was an obvious niche for a chain of cheap clothing stores. In the US, however, the same niche is oversaturated: Walmart, Target, Macy's, JC Penney and others.

There are also loads of places like 'Forever 21' which have cheap stuff for teens which is more stylish than Primark.

Primark is even cheaper than the above list

Forever21? No, they just have their own stuff, aimed at a young market.

Primark's far cheaper than Old Navy!

In case my recollection was wrong I just looked on the Old Navy website, but basic things like t-shirts or vest tops that would be £2 in Primark are $15-25 in Old Navy.

Old Navy usually has some kind of deal going on.

Well I don't/ won't be shopping in either, not so much for price and quality reasons as that I need long fittings in everything, and I have difficulty keeping a long fitting shirt tucked in, and the sleeves of non-long fitting shirts are 4"-6" short of my wrists.

Anyone who pays full price at Old Navy, JCP, Kohl's, etc. is a mug. Our junk mail is perpetually full of 20%-50% discounts for those and similar stores. When Mrs P buys clothes for little Miss P at Kohl's she is always given more coupons for the next week. On one occasion Mrs P didn't have the coupon for that day, and when the sales assistant asked if she had one, the sales assistant said, "Never mind, I'll take 20% off for you.".

Thinking about it, the competition for Primark is going to be the dollar stores, and places like Magic Mart and Ollies (which are local/regional), but I'm sure everywhere has trashy discount stores, don't they?

M&S tried that, and the Americans didn't go for it, unfortunately.

Marks and Spencer owned a handful of upmarket supermarkets in New Jersey....Kings Supermarkets. They sold some Marks and Spencer dry and seasonal goods. M&S sold the stores about 8 years ago.

They also owned Brooks Brothers clothing stores...they sold the stores around 12 years ago.

We recently went to Bermuda on holiday and were delighted to find an M&S there. Missus stocked up on knickers and we got some other clothes and sweets from the food section. We remarked to one of the staff about how sad we are that there are no Marks in North America proper and she told us that they're planning to return to Canada next year.

It's funny how it's not 'upmarket' back home, more of a pensioners' paradise

That has changed over the last decade, to some extent. I remember I used to dread getting clothes as presents from M&S when I was a child. Some of the stuff was OK, but I'd get polo shirts (which I've always hated), jumpers with pointless buttons and T-shirts with slogans that tried to be cool and failed. These days, they still carry some of that sort of stuff, but at least for men's clothes they are much better.

Of course, the difference may be more that I was shopping in their Oxford Street stores, where the clientele is a mixture of teenagers, young professionals and Arabic tourists.

I think Kings and BB were upmarket before M&S owned them...and they still are.

I would say that M&S is definitely considered upmarket back home. Not for their clothes, per se, but for their food and home items, they are absolutely upmarket.

Agreed. Of the main high street retailers they have the best quality clothing and also good quality food. ..... In other words, there is no national chain that is above them quality-wise.

Similar for so many stores: Bed Bath and Beyond, Michael's, Jo-Ann Carfts, always sending 30%+ off coupons. Makes me wonder how much the mark-up is!

I think in Bed, Bath and Beyond particularly it's very high, then everyone faffs around with those coupons and gets it down to somewhere near normal.

I have never spent more then 12 dollars on any one item at Old Navy, if its not on clearance there, I don't buy it, luckily they always have racks of clearance. Usually I spend 4 to 5 dollars on a shirt there. (I don't like their jeans.)

At the jeans store I go to go, they have non-stop sales, so again never buy anything full price there either.

Only thing I wish for is a decent shoe store.
