The price of pale cheese

My husband and I recently returned to seattle after a quick visit to family in the UK. I was stunned at how cheap the cheese was. We ate our way through wales and various deli departments. Now I have returned here and I can't fathom why the damn cheese is so expensive.

Is this just a seattle thing? Its not as if I want imported cheese, just not the bright orange faux cheddar stuff that tastes like playdough.

ANy thoughts, anyone?

no, its the same here in MA.
we actually have some good local cheeses, especially from Vermont - but they are much more expensive than comparable cheeses in the UK. Indeed I bought a british smoked chedar in a local store for the same price as a VT cheddar in the same store.

I noticed that dairy products are far more expensive in NY than in my little UK hometown as well. It can't be because it's more expensive to produce, because me and my wife drove out to the Pocono mountains in Pennsylvannia for a break one time, and went shopping at a wal-mart that was literally in the middle of nowhere, and everything was absolute dirt cheap. A large block of cheese was about $2, milk was about $2 for a quart, and 2litres of Coke was $1.08.

I guess it's transport costs and the knowlegde that they can charge more for cheese to city folk.

Price can vary between supermarkets. I have found that Trader Joe's tends to have cheaper cheese than the larger supermarkets.

Have to agree American cheese is awful. Don't think the yanks have caught onto the concept that cream and such products actually come from cows, not from spray cans.
