Re: Price of gas update...
We hit $2.759 at the weekend and it has dropped slightly, saw $2.729 from one of the more competitive stations this afternoon. Hopefully it will have dropped a bit more by the time I need to fill the beast, although it seems to be headed up more than it heads down recently.

Some stations hit record high never seen before gas prices today, some stations at $6.34 per US gallon, while other stations are a bit lower in the $6.15 to $6.20 range.
Was as low as $5.66 yesterday.

Curious, at what price if any would you stop driving?
We stopped driving a while back as the cost to put gas into even a Mazda 2 became a burden, example at today's prices from empty, would be close to $60 for a sub-compact,

Don't know. I've paid $4.25, even a little more, for a gallon years back when I was making less money so probably at least $6-7 (though realistically I need my car so much I'd probably have to keep going to $10.00 or more), but I'd start riding my bike into work whenever possible to stretch out a tank first.
It's been years since it's been over $4.00 here, but it was sitting at $3.07 on my way into work this morning, which would make me guess it's at or above $4.00 in California by now. Either way, I still have just under half a tank left so hopefully it drops a bit before I have to fill up again. Or hopefully I'm in or near Wisconsin when I next need to fill up. One of the two.

We packed in driving when it hit $1.40/liter on a consistent basis, at current prices even a Mazda 2 (which is what we had) is a $60-$70 fill up each week, would hate to see what people in large cars pay.
I did go to a scooter for a year, I used like 2 1/2 gallons of gas a week on it doing about 20 miles per day on workdays.

Looking at gas buddy using my dads zip code near San Diego a couple stations are over $4, majority are in the 3.69 to 3.81 range.

That being said, for work at least, it's only a 10 mile bike ride, which is really a piece of piss (I often walk 10-15 at weekends for exercise anyway when it gets nice out), and I was actually thinking about riding in at least a couple days a week this summer for the exercise anyway if I could find away around the fact that I'd have to have a whore's bath in the sink or something when I made it into work
I'm a 15 minute walk from the train at home, and it's a 45 minute walk from the station to work but I can't imagine fares will be cheap if gas were to hit something ridiculous like $7.00/gal and the train is only really usable for one line between my town and Chicago so that limits me quite a lot.

Re: Price of gas update...
Biggest hurdle for most and driving in large parts of US/Canada are not designed for people not having cars. Here within the city its decent transit, but your going to be largely stuck in the city as Greyhound pulled out so there is very limited inter-city transportation these days and most city's don't have 24/7 transit so shift workers are often stuck with no alternatives.
It wasn't just gas, the overall costs to drive a car became crazy.$400-$500 per month just for gas and insurance excluding the costs for oil changes, tires, parking fees etc.
