Apparently our higher prices are due to limited refinery capacity for this region and high demand, or so they say.

Once higher taxes are accounted for as well as the exchange rate, on average this region pays 13 cents more per liter then the towns on the US side.

This makes a large difference in prices in the US.
Here is Canada's stats fairly uniform though with Montreal and Quebec SURPRISE! leading the tax parade.

I was surprised to learn, whilst chatting to a Canadian friend last night, that Canadian fuel tax is a fixed value rather than a percentage of the base price

'Tis in the UK, though VAT is also charged at 20% on the before-VAT price.

I think VAT is always based on the before-VAT price

It still amazes me that they have the nerve to charge VAT on the Fuel tax.

That's double taxation

If only you were right, but no, the VAT is charged on the price including duty.

Yup, but not that it really matters because they have a certain revenue "take" in mind and if they didn't collect VAT on duty on fuel then the figures would just be higher, either on fuel, or overall. One way another HMR&C will get their pound of flesh.

OK, I see what you're saying, and I didn't quite say what I meant - which is that VAT is charged on the "after-duty price".

I think the US charges a fixed amount per gallon also, with Pensylvania possibly having the highest tax this year.

There is also GST charged on the total price at 5%.

Quebec may lead the tax parade, but they on average have lower gas prices then BC, specifically the southern end of BC, we generally have the highest gas prices in the country.

Montreal for example average is 1.07, vs 1.22 in Vancouver.

Even outside of Metro Vancouver where there are lower gas taxes, still averaging 1.16 to 1.20/liter.

As they say BC = Bring Cash. We pay for the most part more for everything compared to other provinces.
