Actually, I think it's under $8.00 now. Basing it on the average petrol price of £1.25/L, per BBC News anyway, and an exchange rate of £1.57/$:

If:
P = £/l ($1.25)
G = L/US Gal (3.785)
E = £/$ (£1.57)

Then:
UK $/gal = P x G x E

= 1.25 x 3.785 x 1.57

= $7.42

Unless I buggered up the calculations, of course.

Yea that could be right actually, I'm thinking of diesel prices and the old exchange rate that was at 1.65. I need to catch up

My initial estimate was based off a price of £1.299/L and an exchange rate of £1.70, so I came to about $8.30 or so.

You need to compare it to US 91 grade pricing to have a like for like to UK unleaded. Still cheap as chips here mind.

As far as the difference in numbers, it's entirely because of the method used to calculate the octane. In the states, we use the ((R+M) /2) average, which sits about 5-10 octane lower than the standard RON measurement Europe uses.

If that wasn't the case, all those imported European cars would ping like hell in the US.

It's about 4, not 10! US 91 ~= UK 95

Then why doesn't my BMW ping on such a low US octane when it requires the highest octane rating in Europe?

It still comes in at more than twice the cost, but not as much as I had always led myself to believe. The exchange rate plays a big part in that, of course.

ECU settings are different, I would assume.

Probably true for California since maximum octane allowed is 91 according to the following article.

( RON Octane Rating x 0.95 = AKI Octane Rating )
98 RON Octane x 0.95 = 93.1 AKI Octane (US measure)
100 RON Octane x 0.95 = 95 AKI Octane (US measure)

So, as you can see the 93 or 94 octane fuel we are all paying an arm and a leg for is actually quite comparable to the higher octane fuels found in Europe and Japan. The people whom have to worry about low octane rating are our friends out west in places like California that are subjected to substandard 91 octane.

91 AKI Octane (US measure) = 95.5 RON Octane
