Why is California's gas so ridiculously expensive compared to everywhere else in the US?
Taxes for one, gas taxes in California tend to be higher then other regions of the country and apparently add about 70 cents per gallon in total.

Also California requires different blend of gas and only a few refineries can provide it apparently.

"California gas is subject to especially high local taxes and fees (which add on about 70¢ per gallon), and state rules require that only special low-pollution blends of fuel are used. As a result, California gas stations can only get fuel from a select few refineries. And when demand increases quickly or there are production issues that slow the local supply, California gas prices—which are high compared to the rest of the country to begin with—hit the roof."

It's running 3.95 US up this way in BC. 5.09 in local currency.

California has to be the special snowflake... we've got to pay for it.

It was a surprise how much more it was for gas out there, even though I was sort of expecting it.

I did see a few stations that had it at around $3.20 in the Central Valley, but it seemed to be more common up around $3.45-$3.60 or so around the Sierras. Just inside the entrance to Yosemite, there was one that had it at $4.05

Whereas, back here in IL, during that time, it was about $2.93.

Diesel has remained stable for the time being. The other day filled up one car with premium at $4.08 a gallon, the other with diesel at $2.65 [that was in Orange County. The cheapest I've seen in L.A. is $2.75].

Wow, diesel is now cheaper than gas again? ...... It must have been nearly ten years ago that diesel rose past the price of gas round here, and for much of the past ten years diesel has been 50c-$1 more per gallon than "regular". The differential has declined over the past year or so, and I think is close to parity though I don't pay close attention to the price of diesel.

Thanks Folinsky for reminding me about the GasBuddy app (in another thread today).

With California gas prices highest in nation now (according to a piece 2 days ago in USA Today) - it's useful to locate the best of the bad.

Premium around where I am in LA - now averaging $4.89-4.99 gal. Ugh....

Gas buddy showing 2.39 for regular back home, with premium at 2.72, and diesel between the two.

Could be worse, still not the most exspensive in North America...

You'd pay about 5.70 per gallon up this way in the local currency.

Gas went down 1 cent yesterday to 1.33/liter for regular stuff (CAD$)

diesel is running about 1.21 per liter, has recently gone down quite a lot, just about a month ago it was running a few cents above gas.

Propane is running 74 cents liter.
