Oh there's also an importer of British goods near here which has monthly sales of expired food so I pick up a few things - sadly the pickled onions always look luminescent and toxic but they generally have some biccies and Indian sauces that are acceptable

Re: Price of food in Brit Stores
I recently moved to Dayton, OH. In Dayton there is a Brit store which I was glad about as I really do miss my Beans on Toast. When browsing the store I was amazed at the extortionate prices of the goods they sold.
My beans were over $4 a can, thats $2 MORE than Kroger!!!
The stuff I did guy, I discovered was stale (albeit in the sellby date). I miss British food but I refuse to be ripped off by a so called British Store that is supposed to cater to the Expat community.
Rant Over!!

We have an airforce base nearby so I have a couple of friends who bring me things from there, I get typhoo tea mostly, sadly they stopped stocking digestives.
My husband has been given several jars of pickled onions since being here but they always looked really off, with suspicous looking little spots on them

I've always wondered this and figured this is a good thread for it.
How many of the British Food stores you've been in are owned or at least managed by Brits? I know the one here in STL is owned by a woman from Norfolk. You would think being Expats themselves, they would be a little more... empathetic.

Re: Price of food in Brit Stores
I work in the food industry, part of my job is to visit different stores on a weekly basis, and I always check out the Brit aisle and it makes my hair curl at some of the prices, when I see a bargain I buy it and just stock up at home, it's not often I get a craving there is more then enough food in the general every day US aisle, but Heinz baked beans are my weakness.
Some of the independent grocers really wack the price up, last year a BE member asked me to get a quote on Robinson's squash and it varied from about $4 to nearly $9 in a store in San Francisco.

Re: Price of food in Brit Stores
I weaned myself off my usual foods (although there is no exact substitute for any of them) I couldn't hack paying $50 for just a few items I craved.
The Brit shop I would frequent in Las Vegas (Decatur Blvd) still send me emails about their specials. That's when you can get the bargains. The Cadbury's Easter boxes etc are a good price after the day. I'm a sucker for Wine Gums, Flakes and Maltesers and they'd have a good sale now and then.

This may just be me but i think the wall mart brand 'great value' beans taste more like i remember Heinz, there not as sweet as Bushs or Boston baked beans.

Re: Price of food in Brit Stores
I find Heinz beans too sweet, and vastly over-rated. My favourites are Branston Beans, but on trips home I'll even grab Sainsburys or Waitrose own-brand before Heinz.
Luckily my trips home have been frequent enough that I've probably bought only 2 or 3 tins of over-priced beans locally since I moved here 5 years ago.
