Question President Bush ... more surprise than good sense?

Is it right that President Bush should allow U.S. port operations to be turned over to a foreign government? Is this totally insane or a good move? UAE seems to be a friend of the USA 'an all. Your views are solicited.

I disagree, but watching the likes of Peter King (R,NY) against Bush is a bit like watching a lawyer and a traffic warden fighting outside a pub. I'm going to be happy whichever one loses

It already was - port operations in the main US ports were operated by British owned P & O and the shareholders agreed to sell out to Dubai Ports World after fierce competition from the Port of Singapore Authority.

I thought the Americans were all for free enterprise? P&O went to the highest bidder.

There is just so much hysteria that P&O is now part of a UAE company. Incidentally the CEO for the US arm of P&O is an English guy who lives a few blocks away from me....haven't seen him for a while but I'd love to know his take on it - he's probably going to get a huge bonus out of it and either a plum job with DPW or a huge pay-off.

Dubai is an ultra-modern city in the UAE (we very nearly went on an expat posting there) and only 25% of the population are locals....most of them don't even work and the emirate is pretty much operating through the efforts of (mainly) Western expats in managerial positions and Asians (Indians, Sri Lankans, Filipinos) doing the menial and domestic work.

I bet few Americans could even point out where Dubai is on a world map......

being that P&O wasn't an American company, it's kind of a mute point about letting johnny foreigner run the ports anyway, this is more a racial issue, which is daft because Bill himself spends a lot of time playing golf in DXB...but anyway, there's a thread that's been going on for a bit in the ME section...mostly a laugh at Fox news though

The diff is that it was a Brit commercial company, being bought by a company OWNED by the UAE government.
