Poor communication skills 'could be costing British
businesses millions'
- Brits' English is flummoxing foreigners, experts say
'Business is going swimmingly.' 'When the chips were down, we really pulled out the stops for
you.' 'It's horses for courses.' 'How long is a piece of string?' 'Do you have the bottle?' 'Let's
roll our sleeves up and get stuck in., 'We can piggy-back this deal onto the other one.'
Truth be told, I don't think there is any other language abused as badly by
people who *ought* to be able to speak it perfectly. The number of native
English speakers who pay no attention to syntax and spelling
is staggering - and their sloppy usage makes it doubly difficult for those
who *don't* speak it as a first language
Margaret Moes, Managing Director of LSS Relocation Limited, who is also Dutch, observes, "the biggest difference in doing business with the Brits compared to doing business with Dutch people is the total lack of directness with the Brits. In business dealings the Brits refuse to commit themselves right away. In fact they are quite inscrutable."
They DO comment that the British are not content to merely teach English; they expect the students to BE English. Shades of British imperialism and memories of Britian's contribution of drugs to China are still alive. The British were very well behaved and very polite when they shipped opium into the country and tried to divide the country up with other European nations
I am the first to admit, but I have found the Chinese still prefer Americans to the British by a large majority. Almost without exception students have told me that they find the British extremely arrogant, aloof, and cold.

Frankly, I was turned off from this British writer when he explained being in a bar and seeing the people he saw. I really do not know what he was doing in a bar, as I rarely had the time for such libations, and the students rarely had much patience for the teachers who spent their nights or weekends there.

barrel of laughs, isn't he.....
